Federal regulators continue to warn consumers about imported products, including food and supplements, that could possibly be tainted and fraudulent. Don’t compromise your health. Being a smart consumer is more important than ever before.The NutraSense Company is helping to inform consumers that the Food and Drug Administration issued a statement last month to “beware of fraudulent dietary supplements”. The FDA is responsible for overseeing the safety and manufacturing quality of food, drugs, medical devices and cosmetics. This job becomes more difficult to keep up with as more and more products are being sourced and manufactured overseas.
“The safety of America’s food and medical products is under serious Challenge,” FDA’s principal deputy commissioner is quoted saying. The difficulty in monitoring imports is leading to more counterfeit and adulterated products entering the U.S.
The FDA has found up to 300 fraudulent products that either aren’t dietary supplements at all, or contain hidden prescription ingredients at levels higher than prescribed by doctors. The top three product categories to closely watch are body building products (80 recalled), sexual enhancement (70 recalled), and weight loss (40 products recalled). Forty percent of drugs consumed in the United States are imported, and a staggering eighty percent of the ingredients used in our drugs are imported.
Our advice for consumers is to take the time to read labels, especially the labels on consumable goods. Avoid supplements that claim to cure or treat conditions. Many will appear as unrealistic, extreme, and a “cure-all”. Be aware of already suspicious product types and learn to identify them. What additional ingredients are added? Where was this product manufactured? Look for Made in the USA prominently displayed on the label.
